Middle School vs General Visibility

Quest Atlantis Survey – Heathrow’s Thoughts on General vs. Middle School Visibility

A very interesting situation has developed. The middle school teachers can create accounts in the middle school visibility which would mean we would not be concerned about kids doing the same quests, however the kids will lose their lumins and quests. To keep their lumins and cols they would have to continue in the general visibility. There are two sides to this coin. In the middle school visibility they only interact with middle school kids, in the general visibility they would interact with elementary and any other middle school kids that are in the general visibility. If they go into the middle school visibility they will be able to do a quest again.

So the issues are:
Are the kids concerned about losing their lumins and cols?
Do they want to only chat with middle school kids when they go to middle school?
Are they happy about remaining in the general visibility and keeping their cols/lumins?

I, Karthik surveyed 61 students about their feelings on this topic. Here are the results:
I surveyed 61 students that were unanimously concerned about losing lumins and cols. They want to stay in general visibility. They don’t want to change to middle school visibility when they get to middle school.

The students felt that they had worked really hard to get where they are now and if they lost everything they would feel “turned off”.

They know that they will be ahead in middle school and the new Questers in middle school visibility could ask help from us, but not if students have to start over again.

The students liked meeting all people and felt that they would be “closed off” if they only had access to middle school visibility.

They didn’t like the idea of losing all they had earned.

They felt they could learn from both younger students and older students.

Middle school is not as flexible with time as elementary school, so students felt that they could not work together collaboratively as much if they were only exposed to middle school students.

The students feel all are equal in QA. They got to know everyone as people not as an age distinction.

Please, comment on this post by asking your class the issues and putting in the data. I would appreciate it because this depends on how we will be talking together in middle school, with everyone, or just middle school. Also it depends if we will keep our data in middle school or lose your data.

  1. Hey Karthik this is great research that you carried out in your school. I particularly like your point about age distinctions. Your teachers can choose to keep the kids all in one visibility. If you could choose just one which would it be - general or middle school for everyone?

  2. Hello Bron, If I could choose, I would like to say General Visibility for my class. Please ask your class the questions so I can update the page.

  3. Karthik,

Thanks again for surveying the studetns. I'm very glad that Mrs. McGrath took the recommendations of your class and decided not to place the middle school teachers in Middle School visibility. We as teachers will have to articulate and align our quests to our grade-level standards, but I feel that the process will be worth it.

    Karthik,
When we go to middle school will we have a new username because were not in Heathrow? And if we become home-school or go to a different school for 5th grade will we still have QA?

  6. Yes we will Daniella, because of my research, I convinced them to let us keep our usernames and passwords. Even if we are homeschooled, you still will have QA.

  7. I want to stay in general visibility so that I can help the elementary students. I want to keep my lumins and cols and i want to be able to keep my quests and not go backwards. Thank you Karthik for your hard work.

  8. Well, I took care of that. We will have many things to do if we are homeschooled. Also, I said that we WILL be keeping our general visibility mode in middle school. I convinced them :)

    Karthik,
When you surveyed are class, I thought it was interesting how everyone wanted to stay in general visibility. When you were talking about middle school visibility, I was thinking it might be better for middle schoolers. Once everyone started saying how we learn from them and they learn from us, I wanted general visibility too. I then asked myself what the benefits of general visibility were and could not think of any. Were you thinking about choosing Middle School Visibility at first and then changed your mind? What are the benefits of Middle School Visibility? Why do you think everyone automatically knew they wanted general visibility

  10. Frances,

I wanted General visibility the 1st time. I dont think there are any benifits to middle school visibility except talking to just middle schoolers. They automaticly knew because, because once I told them what would happen if they get middle school visibility, they didnt like ther idea.

  11. I want to stay in General visibility because I want to talk to people around the world and also all the hard work that I did to get all my cols and lumins I don't want to loose. I will not be able to talk with my good friend hees18drew.

  12. I think it is good to stay in General Visibility because the cols and lumins we have earned will be gone. We cannot work to gether to regain them. It also good to stay in General Visibility because I would like to talk to people all over the world in different grades. Not just middle schoolers.

  13. You all made some very valid points about staying in the middle school visibility. For those of you who are concerned about your usernames and passwords, these will move with you as we would have to create a new account for you if we changed your username. If we make a new account you would lose your lumins and cols, and many of you have already mentioned that you don't want this to occur. We may have to consider asking teachers to use letters such as scps in front of usernames rather than school identifiers as those identifiers will not mean anything when you move schools. You have given me more food for thought.

As of this month, all students in our school district will remain in the general school visibility and we will transfer accounts when teachers enroll classes in Quest Atlantis.

We still have to talk about students who move out of the school district, or those students who become home schooled or enter virtual school program. I will pass these concerns on for further discussion.

I will post a comment when we have new information.
